The Federal Election
October 10, 2016. 100 days after the Federal election. An ALP victory will mean marriage has been redefined, and homosexual marriage is a legal reality in Australia. The Presbyterian Church of Australia has already made it clear that homosexual marriage is not marriage.
In 2013, the General Assembly of Australia affirmed the biblical definition of marriage as a “lifelong union of one man with one woman, voluntarily entered into, excluding all others…” It further declared that “same-sex marriage will not contribute to the good of society but will reduce the respect in which marriage is held and further legitimise the production of children for same-sex couples when a child should as far as possible have a mother and father.”
As Christians, we have a duty to seek the good of our nation. Australia currently enjoys the benefits of a stable society built on marriage and family. To change this foundation and embed motherlessness and fatherlessness in public policy is bad policy, and weakens our nation’s foundations. Know the consequences of your vote at this upcoming federal election:
The Coalition policy is to ask you about homosexual marriage via a plebiscite post-election.
The ALP policy is to impose on you homosexual marriage by October 10 this year.
The Presbyterian Church understands that the moral matrices by which each of us evaluates political parties are often wider than one issue and weighted differently. They include concerns about social justice, equity, and morality when weighing the common good. However, redefining marriage is a once in a lifetime issue, and it is our belief it should be weighed accordingly, and considered carefully.
The Possibility of a Plebiscite
If the Coalition are elected, and a plebiscite is held, the Presbyterian Church of Australia believes it is a duty of all Christians to vote for retaining the current definition of marriage and therefore urges all our congregations to be actively involved in the campaign to preserve marriage as “the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.”
